My favorite Shostakovich/Rostropovich combo is DS8, Teldec 9031-74719-2.
Premiered in 1943, this is what World War II must have sounded like
(although the liner notes disagree, saying that the belief that the
symphony relates "exclusively" to WWII is "quite incorrect.").
