About 50 years ago, Life magazine ran an article about the tastes of
what were then the highbrows, upper middlebrows, lower middle-brows, and
lowbrows. All I remember is their supposed preferences in music and drink.
Ranging from low- to highbrow:
Drink:
Beer, Manhattans, Dry Martinis, cheap red wine.
Music:
The popular music of the day, Broadway musicals, 19th century symphonies,
Bach and before plus Ives and after.
