I liked most of the Ken Russell films on composers. The ones I know of
are: 'The Music Lovers' with Richard Chamberlain playing Thaikovsky, A
short film about Bruckner, The Mahler film in question 'The L-Shaped Room',
Another film about a British composer whose name escapes me (Arnold Bax?).
After this Russell married the leading lady.
In fact the only one I'm doubtful about is the first which is an earlier
and saner film!
One thing I am sure of, Russell loves everyone one of the composers in
question.
Regarding Steve's comments on the Mahler film in particular. Isn't the
view portrayed exactly that held by must people on Mahler's personality
and development? Although, I don't think Russell portrays it as strongly
as Steve suggests. It rather a case of, for Mahler his music comes before
everything else.
