In my previous posting, I questioned the point of having public television
if it did not offer "unique" programming.
John Wiser wrote in response to me:

I'm not aware of any type of programming on PBS which is not available on
various cable and satellite tv networks. At a minimum, there's the Arts &
Entertainment Network, The History Channel, The Discovery Channel, The
Education Network, Home & Garden Network, Court TV, 24 hour news networks,
2 Congressional channels, and The Animal Planet Network. So, I notice
duplication.
This leads to the issue of a public source providing a service to
the American people which is covered by private sources. Whatever the
appropriate decision might be, the current duplication should be considered
in the equation.
