He was professor at Moscows conservatory for a big bunch of years.  He
was very popular in his time, what for the quick gives an idea of that
his music didn't belong to the avant-garde.  Now he is almost forgotten
although quality in the symphonies.  People forget and forget and forget...

Never heard of, but so I am not a renaissance nut either, but this sounds
indeed interesting.
