On a recent trip to Boston I came across Barbirolli's live Halle Orchestra
Sibelius 5/Nielsen 4 on Carlton/BBC Radio Classics. Someone on the List
had recommended it so I decided to grab it, knowing that it's out of print.
I finally sat down with it after I got back to Gainesville, and by the
end of the first movement it was obvious that this was now one of my very
favorite Sibelius 5's. Joy!! But then, AT the end of the first movement,
the last two bars or so, everything exploded into a chaos of clicking.
And the first several bars of the second were accompanied by a somewhat
mellower version of same. Yes, it was a new and shrinkwrapped CD, but
there indeed was a quite visible surface flaw that neither of my other two
better players could get past either. A feverish web search finally turned
up one British vendor who listed this disc. But today they got back to me
after a couple of weeks with the bad news-- supplier out of stock. AAARGH!

Now, I don't want to suggest anything illegal involving recent advances
in home electronics, but if there's any kind soul out there who has this
release and can "burn" me out of this wretched state of music-freak
desperation, or suggest any flawed-CD remedies I might not have heard
about, please email me direct. I've already tried making a CDR of it,
but the chaotic clicking transferred undiminished. This is a whale of a
performance, and I feel just locked out of the proverbial garden. Thankee,

Jon Lewis
