Machaut may have got the ball rolling with his "Ma fin est mon [?]
commencement et mon commencement ma fin" (apologies for any errors in
French) while not strictly palindromic certainly partakes of the spirit.
There's also the canon in retrograde from Bach's Musical Offering. Just 2
of the best known. Oh, there's a piece not by Mozart for two violins to
play, one starting at the end and upside down. You put the music on a
table between them. Don't know who really wrote it.
