Excellent point. Another way of putting it: Where I live, you can walk
into a record store with $50 (Canadian), spend it all and walk out with
either
a) two full-priced CDs or
b) five Naxoces
If you've done your research, you can walk out with either two or five
great recordings. If you haven't done it, let's say you pick five at
random from the Naxos barrel or two from the majors bin, chances are there
will be at least two of the five will be as good as or better than the two
randomly chosen majors. Don't get me wrong, I have no axe to grind. I get
all my CDs free, but I have a particular affection for the six shelves of
white-spined Naxoces. The serious way in which they are attacking the
reprtoire and the standard of performance, more or less comparable to the
majors, are an admirable combination.
