Being totally objective when listening to any piece of music might be
impossible, and when there's a negative preconception, it gets even harder.
Bernstein's an icon and gets much criticism as any icon does.
I've never had a good opinion of Marriner's interpretations. Yet, I was
very impressed with his Hanssler disc of two Schumann symphonies. We try
to have an open mind; sometimes it works, sometimes not.
