Cindy,
Bees have been over wintering successfully on honey for millions of years
before sugar was ever put in a bag.  If you live in the frozen north where
bees cannot fly for six months of the year there may be an advantage in
having a winter diet with less solid matter but in less hostile climates it
will make no difference.
