Deryk Barker concerning Schnabel:

>I have both: the 1st with Szell and the 2nd with Boult. I'm not sure
>I'd entirely go along with your "by the time he recorded them":
>Schnabel never had the technique of a Richter or Horowitz.

Indeed he was never a powerhouse virtuoso, but according to Arrau and
others, in the 1920's Schnabel's technique was much more polished than
later and up to pretty much everything he wanted to play. It only started
to fray in the '30s.

>The 1st is, IMHO, the less successful - he simply isn't the right kind of
>pianist for it.

In what sense - because his sound isn't big enough? Concerto no 2 is by far
the more difficult one.
