Ian Crisp qualifies his statement about *definitive* twentieth-century
pieces:
>Not necessarily the best pieces written during the century, but the one
>or ones tha future generations may look back on as best summing up the
>particular musical nature of this departing century.
Interesting statement. I would go with the best pieces. "Particular
musical nature..." (as opposed to best) sounds kind of loaded, plus,
the phrase has all the warmth of a post-Doctoral research paper.
Not the way that I would want to be remembered, even if I were one of
those "particular" composers.
