I wouldn't have thought that all musicians would be lumped together, but
that's just what Classic CD did in arriving at its 100 best. I'll just
list the top 20 and a few others that caught my attention:
1. Richter (great choice)
2. Oistrakh
3. Horowitz
4. Casals
5. Rostropovich
6. Menuhin
7. Heifetz
8. Rachmaninov
9. Gould
10.Kreisler
11.Schnabel
12.Rubinstein
13.Argerich
14.Lipatti
15.Arrau
16.du Pre
17.Brain
18.Brendel (only 18?)
19.Curzon
20.Cortot
25.Galway (the flute gets little respect)
26.Pollini (Gerardo, what do you think?)
28.Perahia
31.Gilels
37.Solomon
39.Mutter
40.Alain
44.Kennedy
49.Lupu
50.Landowska
58.Leonhardt
63.Kissin
66.Vengerov
80.Tureck
81.Uchida
89.Hamelin
100.Sabine Meyer (how did she get in?)
No Marsalis, Christian Lindberg, Moravec, Evelyn Glennie, Kipnis,or
Stolzman.
Overall, the lasting impression I have is how many superb artists there
have been in this century. The 21st century should be even better.
