Roger Hecht:
>One I'd like to hear is Ormandy...
Well worth the trouble - it's a fine performance, and made doubly
attractive by the fact that it's in a twofer with a superb version of
the 4th, one of my favourites of the Shostakovich symphonies.
I think Ormandy is sometimes thought of patronisingly because he was
associated for so long with the very mainstream repertoire, and then
recorded a lot of it again when he moved to RCA. Among my favourites are
his Prokofiev 4th, Mahler 10th, Hindemith Concert Music and Rachmaninov
1st. I once decided not to buy his record of William Schuman's 9th - I
forget the coupling - and have always regretted it.
Further to the Karel Ancerl/Czech Philharmonic version on DG, a friend
has it (in mono) with this addition on the cover: Souvenir of the Tour
of Australia 1959. It makes no mention of a stereo version.
