In January 2002 SHA will have an excellent meeting in Mobile,
Alabama organized by Greg Waselkov. I (and I am sure all of you) will
be attending. On this list we have discussed in the past the posibility
of SHA going to Puerto Rico and unfortunately, because of our meeting
time slot (height of the tourist season), that is not going to happen.

I am very pleased to announce that we can all get to go to
Puerto Rico after all. First, of course, go to SHA in January but then
one of our sister societies will be meeting in PR that summer.

37th Annual Meeting of the Council on America's Military
Past (CAMP) - July 10-14, 2002 in San Juan, Puerto Rico!

Hotel (new one): Wyndam San Juan (historic district)

        $119 [$140 including taxes etc.] a night

Reception on Wednesday, papers on Thursday, Friday and
Saturday but also a set of wonderful tours of the
historic forts and sites around San Juan. On Sunday
there is an optional plane tour to Saint Croix and
          Viegues Island.

A 100 room block has been reserved, so if you are
interested join CAMP now and let the right people
know you plan on being in San Juan in July 2002.

Puerto Rico, by the way, is not that bad in the summer
          because of cooling ocean breezes.

The Society for Military History and England's
Fortess Study Group and Coast Defense Study Group
will also be supporting the conference.

Contact Person: Col. Herb Hart PO Box 1151, Ft. Myers,
Florida 22211 Phone (703) 912-6124 E-mail: [log in to unmask]

If you are interested in attending CAMP 2002 the first thing you should
do is join the council. Membership will get you CAMP's excellent JOURNAL
and its Newsletter (THE HELIOGRAM - which Col. Hart edits).

        MEMBERSHIP: Membership Secretary
CAMP 518 (West) Way Worry Lane
                    Phoenix, AZ 8502

Give your name, address, phone #, e-mail, military background (if any),
professional interests, occupation and send this information and
a membership check (made out to CAMP for $35.00 for an individual
membership) to the above address. There is no student membership unless
you are under 18 years of age (junior $15). [MB - you are not under 18!]

Many historical archaeolgoists are already members of CAMP and
some of these (Sprague, Babbits, Scott et al) might want to organize a
session on military archaeology for CAMP 2002.

IMPORTANT: Our first obligation, however, is, of course, to
attend SHA 2002 (January) in Mobile, Alabama and to give Greg Waselkov
and his colleagues our FULL support. I am going to go to both meetings
but if I had to choose it would, of course, be SHA Mobile.
