A similar pipe was found on the site of the West Point Foundry, Cold Spring,
NY (across the river from the Military Academy) in the area of the "Workers
Housing" during excavation preceding remediation of the Constitution Marsh
for heavy metal contamination (marsh to be replaced) by Grossman, et al in
the early 1990s for the US Army Corps of Engineers and EPA as part of a
larger Superfund cleanup of the environs. If location is anything, it was in
the vicinity of a "mysterious" steamworks not identifiable from the old
stereo photograph as something recognizable to us. Perhaps a power plant of
early vintage in the factory that produced America's first locomotive ca.
1829 for a South Carolina forestry industry.
