Dear Histarchers,
Many must be familiar with the thick 'black' glass bottle bases with the
high kick-ups found on most nineteenth century sites. I have noticed some
with a hole punched through the apex of the kick-up. On one recent site I
found ten or more with such holes, so can no longer regard the features as
a result of accidental breakage. I can only think that they were used as
some sort of home-made funnel. Any ideas?
Regarding another aspect of the bottle bases; some have a milky blue
blemish around the apex of the kick-up. Is this due to the contact of the
puntil with the bottle base plus some other factor? There were attempts to
assign a date to this feature but I suspect the feature was found to have a
broader date range than first hoped.
Regards, Robert.
