FIELD SCHOOL ANNOUNCEMENT

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and
the Department of Anthropology announce

An Archaeological Field School:

COLONIAL SETTLEMENT ARCHAEOLOGY ON VIRGINIA'S EASTERN SHORE

The Department of Anthropology at
Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville
will conduct a seven week archaeological field school
from May 24-July 8, 2000.

This year's archaeological investigations will focus
on the excavation of a colonial settlement site in the
Pungoteague Creek area on Virginia's Eastern Shore.
Instruction includes excavation techniques, artifact
identification, mapping, soil analysis, laboratory
and interpretative techniques.  In addition to daily
field work, participants attend weekly lectures
and discussions on historical archaeology,
material culture and archival research. Guest lectures
on the modern cultural and natural history
of the Eastern Shore are offered.
Field trips to archaeological sites and collections at
Colonial Williamsburg, and Jamestown Island, Virginia
are also planned.

Program Registration:

Participants for this field school
are selected from the review of submitted applications.
Applicants describe why they are motivated to attend
the field school and provide names and phone numbers of references.
Enrollment is limited and instruction is one to one.
Admission to the program is on a rolling basis
and spaces are limited.

Application forms are available by request from the
Department of Anthropology or through e-mail.

Applications must be submitted by April 30, 2000.

Participants who are not interested in acquiring
college credits will be admitted to the field school
on a case by case basis.


Tuition Costs:

Nine (9) total credit hours will be offered in two sessions
[Anthropology 375 (6hrs) and Anthropology 475 (3hrs)]

Tuition costs for undergraduates:
out of state
1071.00 6 hrs credit  (session I only- 4 weeks)
1607.40 9 hrs credit (session I & II- 7 weeks)

Non-registered non-credit participants-
pay a flat daily field fee $30.00/day


Facilities and Fees:

Dormitory rooms are available
The dormitory has an equipped kitchen
and participants pay for and manage food/meals as a group.

Participants pay for:
* SIUE tuition (or if non-credit a daily field fee- see below)
* a field school fee of $100.00
* dormitory fees $50 week @ 7 weeks = $350.00
* food fees est. $50 week @ 7 weeks = $350.00
