Matt:

It's like Normandy. My ancestors waited to be sure the initial
landings were going to stick and then (1650s) they came over. My ancestors
were Dutch (= smart), your ancestors were English Puritans (= *****).

John Cotter, by the way, was also smart at Normandy, not landing
until a few days after the initial waves onto the beaches. So, he got
blown up in the hedgerows inland and not on the beach. He told me that
"the Germans knew what they were doing, the Americans ...".

I might as well add my other replies to this message and then
SHUT Up for some time.

Adrian: Yes, I think most of us knew what you really meant and
since you waited until the Post-WW II era to arrive you were even smarter
than my Dutch ancestors.

Ian: I was under the impression that the last Englishman to have
an interesting sex life was Charles II (and he did get around). I only recall
from "Still Digging" (Wheeler's autobiography) something about calling to
to certain "ladies" (from a canal?) in Italy in WW II.

More seriously - has any one done a study or biography on the life
of Sir Mortimer Wheeler or his historic place in the rise of 20th century
archaeology? - any one out there know of such a work? If not, some one should
think about such research. He is a key figure (not only in Europe but
also in the Indian Subcontinent).
