PANEL DISCUSSION TITLE:
'Reach America' - Looking To The Future Of Archaeology And The Public Schools
ORGANIZERS:
Tara Tetrault (Montgomery College, SHA Inter-Society Relations Committee
delegate to NCSS) and Patrice L. Jeppson (Center for
Archaeology/Baltimore County Public Schools, SHA Public Education and
Information Committee pre-collegiate education issues)
ABSTRACT:
Obligations to the public, the preservation of sites, and the safeguarding
of the profession require outreach development. Many professionals
intellectually enjoy such activities and actively seek to create them. But
outreach stretches limited resources (money, time) and often ends up
under-produced: Expectations exceed the ability to achieve objectives. As
outreach expands on the national and international fronts, an opportunity
arises for assessment of our aims and goals. To this end, this panel
discussion will address one realm of public archaeology - that of formal
school education (K-12).
This panel brings together archaeologists and educators to discuss (1) the
role of archaeology (and the opportunities for archaeologists) in formal
school educational programming and (2) the place of educators in
archaeology outreach. Discussants include private and public school
educators, Officials from the National Council for the Social Studies
(NCSS), and archaeologists actively engaged in educational outreach.
