Roger Hecht reproduces an article from the Boston Globe noting that in all
probability "tiny" WHRB in Cambridge is the most likely carrier of the Met
broadcasts in the future. Some comments:
a. For WCRB the move continues a trend toward blandness and a limited
repertory. It is almost wall to wall Vivaldi until midnight- then
things get a bit more adventurous. The station used to broadcast
several nationally syndicated orchestral series but stopped doing
that on some pretext or other. At least one, the Chicago Symphony,
was picked up by WHRB.
b. WHRB is largely run by Harvard students, and is subject to certain
limitations because of this. Programming gets a bit irregular
during the summer break and other academic holidays. On the other
hand the concentrated composer by composer orgies which characterize
extensive pre-final study periods is unique.
WHRB may be tiny but its classical music programming is the most extensive
and adventurous in Boston.
