Please allow a little background. Bob Draper provided his contention that
there's something very wrong/inappropriate with a person "salivating" over
the next Karajan performance or recording; I assumed that the name of any
well-known artist could be subsitituted for Karajan. I provided a response
wrapped within a "humorous framework" and stated that I was salivating in
anticipation of volume 4 of Russell Sherman's Beethoven piano sonata series
on GM.
Subsequently, Bob wrote:
>I don't think you take these discussions seriously enough sometimes.
Fair enough. In this posting, I'll be nothing but "serious".
I respond in a humorous context when one of two conditions exist. First,
I feel I've been "insulted" a little, and I'd rather write back with humor.
Second, the subject matter seems to me to have an inherently humorous
component. My response to Bob covered the second condition. What was
humorous about Bob's contention? Just that I find it humorous when a person
is critical of "normal" human behavior.
Further, to write a "humorous" response does not mean that there are no
serious elements to the response. There were three serious elements,
between the lines, in my response to Bob:
1. I am one of the persons that Bob was referring to, because I often,
figuratively, salivate at the prospect of a new recording from an artist
I hold in high musical esteem.
2. I see nothing wrong with feeling this way and saying it upfront. It's
merely one of the normal traits exhibited by humans and most other living
creatures.
3. It is pointless to "rail" against normal human behavior.
I hope that clarifies my position on this issue. For the life of me, I
don't see how this posting is preferable to my previous one. And, I intend
to go back to posting in the manner I prefer. This is a one-time method of
response I was glad to provide to address Bob's concerns and included the
fact that I think well of Bob.
