With an old car that allows far too much road noise and a stereo set up far
short of adequate, my listening is limited when travelling. This despite
the fact that it is usually only in a car that I can get extended periods
of uninterupted listening time and be alone so that my peculiar tastes
don't offend anyone else's ears.
Symphonic works are pretty much out; the changes in dynamic levels would
require so much volume adjusting that I would quickly become a hazzard on
the road. I find that opera works pretty well: a long trip affords the
time to listen to a complete opera. Also chamber music and some piano
music are fine. Sometimes on a trip I will listen through a complete set
of a composer's work. For example, I did the Beethoven violin sonatas on
one seven hour drive and really experienced the developments in his style.
Jazz is a frequent companion in the car. And, finally, the car is a great
place to indulge in guilty listening pleasures. On a recent trip with Judy
Garland's Live From Carnegie Hall in the CD player, I arrived refreshed,
happy and humming.
