Bob Draper writes:
>I know loads of people who bought a lot of Mozart because 'he's the man
>to have' and then got rid of it as they moved on to romantic composers.
I have gone the other way. Though it takes a lot to get me excited unless
the orchestra has over 100 musicians, four harp, off stage brass, etc; here
are a few Mozart works that are worthy for the Romanticophile:
"Laudate Dominum" (Marriner/Hendricks on EMI--not very impressed with Kanawa)
Violin Concerto #1--Ironic it has more romantic pathos than the later ones.
Sinfonia Concertante--again, some surprisingly romantic-era chord
progressions.
Other earlier music as jumping off points for the Romanticophile:
Gesualdo Motets
Vivaldi's "Nulla in mundo pax sincera" Kirkby/Preston all the way
Handel's "De torrente in via bibet" from Dixit Dominus
These pieces will give you the long-lined pathos-ridden melodies you've
been looking for.
John Smyth, standing up for Ginastera's "Panambi!" Anyone check it out yet?
