The most interesting video version I've seen of the Britten was made by Sir
Malcolm Sargent with the London Symphony Orchestra in 1947. He provides a
fine introduction, conducts, and serves as narrator. It's in b&w, runs
20:00, and was (for a time) commercially available through the Crown Films
Unit of the UK. We have it at Stanford.
I understand that there was a video release of the Sean Connery version,
but have not acquired nor seen this.
Tower Classics in Berkeley carries the largest supply of videos, LDs, and
DVDs I have seen on the west coast, and would be a good place to start.
Ask for Melvin Jahn.
