Ah the joys of citizen fantasy! Back when I worked for the County of San
Diego, I managed a 100-lot subdivision on Mount Palomar (home of the 200-inch
telescope). At the Planning Commission hearing on the map, about 50 people
came out claiming the grading would destroy prehistoric archaeology. The
Commission continued the case and directed me to visit the site with their
spokesman. After driving the hour long trip to the property (note this guy
was wearing a plastic pyramid on his throat), we arrived at a pile of natural
boulders. He proceded to proclaim this an ancient observatory of immense
archaeological value. Where I saw natural impressions in the rock, he saw
Atlantean writing. When I finally had to debunk him, he flew into a tirade
and accused me of incompetance. I felt lucky to get back to my vehicle alive.
The point here is that there are lots of folks out there who make crazy
statements all the time. We have to be professional, courteous, and firm in
our response.
