paul bahn and colin renfrew's "archaeology" 3rd edition has a good
(and pretty up-to-date) introductory overview -
        including something about CATS: the Controlled Archaeological Test Site
built by the US army's Construction Engineering Research Labs in urbana illinois
- about which i would very much like to know more -
