Greetings,
I am putting together a symposium for the 2001 SHAs and even though the time for registration is rapidly
approaching, I am putting out a call for submissions.
Here at the University of Texas-Austin, we have recently been grappling with the question of what defines a
Household in historical archaeology. While on the surface this might seem a simple question, it is extremely
complex. It varies greatly in space and time. This session will pull together all those interested in how we as
historical archaeologists define a Household and how it can be affected by concepts of gender, race,
ethnicity, class, location, size, etc. Papers can be wide in scope, perhaps a synthesis of household studies in
an area or time period, or site specific. I leave that up to you. I do ask that you grapple with the questions of
household boundaries and meanings, and on a wider scale, what your definition can add to the understanding
of the Household in the past.
Please pass this on to anyone who might be interested in participating. My e-mail is [log in to unmask] I'd
love to hear any ideas you might have or answer any questions.
Thank you!
