This conference provides an excellent opportunity to present archaeology
and material culture to historians (the bulk of attendees). This
conference itself is free, small, and emphasizes discussion. Papers are 30
minutes each. Sessions usually consist of three papers, one discussant and
a Q&A period.

If anyone is interested in forming a pane on historical
archaeology/material culture, please contact me--I am thinking of
submitting a version of my work on Chamber Pots in the seventeenth- and
eighteenth-centuries. For more information, check out:

Sixth Annual Institute Conference

The Omohundro Institute of Early American History and Culture invites
proposals for its Sixth Annual Conference to be held June 9 - 11, 2000.
Sponsored by the Institute and hosted by the University of Toronto and York
University, the meeting will take place at the University of Toronto in
downtown Toronto.

The Institute's field of interest encompasses all aspects of the lives of
North America's indigenous and immigrant peoples during the colonial,
Revolutionary, and early national periods of the United States and the
related histories of Canada, the Caribbean, Latin America, the British
Isles, Europe, and Africa from the sixteenth century to approximately 1815.

All who share such interests are encouraged to attend and participate in
the conference. Given the location of the meeting, the program committee is
particularly interested in sessions dealing with early Canada and, more
broadly, the Great Lakes region. Papers on literary, visual or material
culture, and theoretical issues are welcomed. Advanced graduate students
and beginning scholars are urged to apply.

Individual submissions should include a one-page proposal and a one-page
curriculum vitae. Proposals for entire panels should be submitted in one
packet by the designated organizer with a one-page curriculum vitae for
each presenter and a page describing each paper. Twelve copies of each
proposal should be sent to:
