Dear Susan,

Connah's book is good, thorough and well written but focuses mostly on
Australia. The Orser/Fagen book is more of a methodological intro, yet
still very valuable.

As for the more culture history aspect there is Brian Fagan's, Clash of
Cultures, with a world-wide perspective. A bit superficial but with lot's
of references to go from.

You might also consider Ch. Orser's reader, Images of the recent past. A
collection of important papers.

You might also want to look at my references and www-links list, browse
from the syllabus:

General introductions are in blue

have fun,

Detlef
