That was according to Grieg, Tovey, and Ernest Newman. Unfortunately, by
the time Grainger recorded it, he was well past his physical prime. I love
the Grieg - more wonderful tunes than you can shake a stick at - and since
I have no problem enjoying a good tune or considering it "less" than good
symphonic construction, I have no problem with the Grieg.
My favorite recording is Fleisher and the Cleveland Orchestra, conducted by
Szell - a sharp, powerful, clear-minded performance - in short, all the
things I associate with great poetry.
