I am astonished. All this talk of soundtracks, and not one reference to
John Williams. Is the man so vilified around this list that he is left
out? Star Wars remains a classic, as does the spookiness of Jaws (his first
Academy Award). Close Encounters is very good, too. I also very much like
the music for JFK.
Other great movie soundtracks from recent times: Silverado, Gettysburg,
The Mission, and to a lesser degree, Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves, and the
Star Trek Movies.
Other great scores from the past: The Magnificent Seven, High Noon, Ben
Hur, The Sting, and to a lesser degree Korngold's stuff (which I find
smarmy).
Sitting above them all, though, is Prokovieff's work for the great Russian
Film Alexander Nevsky. Talk about your thrilling scores. The Battle on
the Ice is incredible.
