Having embarked upon my NY/Mahler/Quasthoff adventure at the end of last
year, I'm now on the New York Philharmonic's mailing list and received a
notice I'd like to pass on to all those w/in a sensible commute from NY's
Upper West Side, who may not have gotten the good news themselves.

On Monday, May 31, at 8:00 pm, Kurt Masur will conduct the NY Philharmonic
in Beethoven's *Missa Solemnis* w/ Christine Brewer, soprano; Marietta
Simpson, mezzo; Anthony Rolfe Johnson, tenor; and Peter Rose, bass; New
York Choral Artists, directed by Joseph Flummerfelt; and American Boychoir,
directed by James Litton.

It will be at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, at Amsterdam Avenue at
112th Street.

*And it will be a free concert!!*

The small print says that "seating is on a first-come first served bases.
The doors will open at 7:00 pm.  Additional seating will be available,
weather permitting, on the Pulpit Green adjacent to the Cathedral.  For
further information, call the Cathedral Box Office at (212) 662-2133."

I'm half tempted to dash up to NYC again for this one but fear I might
not get there early enough to obtain admission.  I suspect the lines will
have formed long before the 7:00 opening if New Yorkers' receptiveness to
such a concert hasn't changed too much since when I was one of its proud
inhabitants.
