If Tchaikovsky was once your favorite but you have grown a little tired of
his symphonies and ballet music, why not try his piano music (all of it is
available on a Vox twofer and threefer) and his songs, or his operas? I can
heartily recommend Eugen Onegin, Pique Dame and Mazeppa, and I just found
Iolanta (but have not listened yet).
In general, when I like a certain composer, but have grown a little stale
on one type of music (the big orchestral works), I listen to a different
type. Recently I've heard chamber music of Saint Saens (WONDERFUL trios
on Naxos!), four-hand piano music of Brahms (Naxos is up to volume four
and projects many more), piano music of Mendelssohn, Schumann, Grieg,
Schubert's music for four hands. Not a single disappointment in the lot.
When I go back to the orchestral music, I listen with fresh ears.
