To say it short: Mahler realized that there were unbalances in Beethovens
(and others) scores. For example; if is was written in the score that the
flutes should play an mf at a certain phrase, and the trumpets play mf at
the same phrase, both cant play an mf because then you will only hear the
trumpets. Mahler adjusted this so the trumpets in this example got to play
for example an p. This caused Beethoven was reduced from being a music
based on rings, to be a music where you could hear all the voices indended
and actually written in the score. This also tells about that Wagner
(whose work with Beethoven Mahler continued), and Mahler not were the great
inventors they were supposed to be, but they were childs of their time as
well.
