Some five or six years ago, while I was driving, I heard a spellbinding
performance of a piano trio, so much so that when I reached my destination
I remained sitting in my car to find out what the work was and who the
recording was by. It turned out to be the Dvorak Dumky (with which I
was only minimally familiar at the time), done by the Eroica Trio, on
the fairly obscure Strings in the Mountains label. I had no idea whom the
Eroica Trio comprised, but I called the radio station to get the details of
the CD, which it turned out was only available from the Trio's management
agency.
The Eroica Trio has paid its dues, and if you had heard them before you had
seen them, you might have a different opinion. In any case, the Strings in
the Mountains CD is their actual recorded debut, but it's not that easy to
find. The other work on the CD is the Lalo piano trio.
