All of Shaw's music published music criticism was collected in a 3-volume
set.

I highly recommend Schumann, Debussy's M.  Croche, Anti-dilettante, Ives's
Essays before a sonata, Virgil Thomson (a US classic), Tovey's Essays in
Musical Analysis (several volumes), Ernest Newman's World of Music, More
Essays from the World of Music, Evenings at the Opera, anything by Neville
Cardus, Andrew Porter, or Wilfred Mellers, Vaughan Williams's National
Music and Other Essays, Stravinsky's Poetics of Music, anything by Leonard
Bernstein.

Not quite in the same category, but still quite fine: Tim Page.  Ned
Rorem has written several books more or less on music, but really about
his opinions and feuds with other composers.  Glenn Gould has written some
very interesting essays, collected in, if memory serves, A Glenn Gould
Reader.  Individual and quirky, but always involving.

Theodor Adorno has his fans (I'm not one of them).  Too damn Hegelian and
The Inevitable, Inexorable Progress toward Musical Destiny for my taste.
Also, I suspect him at times of intellectual dishonesty (details furnished
on request) - that is, for or against work not on "intrinsic" bases, but by
their conformance to some crackpot idea of history.
