 "In order to write music, you must have a feeling for harmony." I
   explained to him that I had no feeling for harmony.  He then said
   that I would always encounter an obstacle, that it would be as though
   I came to a wall through which I could not pass.  I said, "In that
   case I will devote my life to beating my head against that wall."


I think that sounds like Cage has a sense of humor.  At any rate, realize
that Schoenberg is deeply rooted in the Germanic tradition of counterpoint
and harmony.  Non-western music treats harmony differently, and I would
say that Cage treats it at least somewhat differently as well.  Even if
you don't appreciate his music, there is a lot to be learned from his
philosophy.  You might try picking up one of his books.
