From what I gather from Schoenberg's writings (and I admit I'm no
expert here), the only thing Schoenberg did was to put Berg through the
counterpoint mill. He felt that Berg was a little too good in 19th-century
rhodomontade and believed that counterpoint would ground the younger man.
This course of study certainly left its mark on much of Berg's work.
