Offhand either returning, at the end of a work - usually one in more than
one movement, or at least, differentiated sections - to the opening theme.
Or, perhaps even more commonly, using the same theme or group of themes
throughout - Schubert's Wanderer Fantasia is an example (is it the first
cyclic piece?) of a single movement, multi-section work based on a single
theme.
Liszt's B minor sonata, Schumann's 4th Symphony are also cyclic.
