Carol B provided a very elegant statement concerning the use of
lithium while breastfeeding. Of course, all should be aware that
printed sources do state that its use should be avoided during
breastfeeding. As a psychopharmacologist, I try to educate
clinicians concerning this drug being OK to use during breastfeeding.
Must state for the record that lithium is actually the best mood
stabilizer to use during pregnancy if it is needed. The reason being
that the other mood stabilizers (mostly anticonvulsants) are
teratogenic.
