Dear Lu Ann and List:
In reference to your recent description of the the SHA public education
committee's current projects, it may be of some interest to know that another
new archaeology education book (not the same type as you are proposing - yours
sounds great!) is in the final review stage prior to publication.
The volume is being sponsored by the SAA Public Education Committee and edited
by Shelley Smith and me. It is called (provisional title only) "Sharing the
Past With Kids: An Archaeology Education Handbook" and contains edited
chapters by 27 archaeology educators. It is intended for use as a textbook by
archaeology students, museology students, and anyone interested in becoming
involved in archaeology education for k-12 students . It is not geared to
prehistoric or historical archaeology particularly, but emphasizes the types
of information and skills archaeologista or other heritage professionals need
to have at their disposal in order to work with pre-collegiate students and
their teachers.
It will be published by AltaMira Press (Mitch Allen is the publisher) of
California later this year. The book covers such topics as how to approach
school systems in the US and Canada to encourage them to include archaeology
education in their curricula, basics of age appropriate lesson planning,
integration of archaeology into various national, state/provincial or local
curriculum standards, evaluation and assessment, program development and
implementation and types of venues in which archaeology education curricula
can be introduced.
Further information will be available when the book comes out but I thought
the list might be interested in knowing what other projects of similar type
are being undertaken.
With best wishes for the success of your upcoming book,
Karolyn Smardz
