Histarch,
I sent a message out last week soliciting comments about a bottle base
mark: DUBUQUE MALTING CO. DUBUQUE IA
From messages received through Histarch and privately, from Susan, Mike,
and Marlin (you know who you are!), the following tentative chronology for
the bottle company is presented:
+ Dubuque Malting Co. formed in 1892 (sources say by either a 3 or a 4-way
merger; sources differ on the name of the original company as either
Dubuque Malting Co. or Dubuque Brewing & Malting Co., the former is more
prevalent though and the more likely)
+the 3 or 4 original plants that formed the D.M. Co. continued operations
in their original plants 1892-1896.
+Jan. 1896 a new plant opens, replacing production from the old plants.
+first mention of name changing to Dubuque Brewing and Malting Co. in Sept.
1901 in a contemporary, primary document (a secondary source indicates the
name change in 1906, without reference; the former is more likely).
+the company closes operations in 1917 owing to Prohibition (some personal
communication and websites indicate that this company may have closed
operations earlier, by the turn of the 20th century, owing to State-level
Prohibition; this could not be independently verified).
+the company was sold in 1934, and the name changed.
Based upon the above, tentative timeline, the bottle base mark presented
above may have a very tight window of 1892 or 1896-1901, if one can assume
(there's that word again!) that the base mark changed at the same time the
company's name changed. A more conservative time frame would be 1892-1917.
Thanks again to all who took the time to answer.
Best,
Robin
