Haydn short on talent? Must be a different Haydn!
For such as there is any standard process of composing there is a large
amount of dogwork which is at best "coldly intellectual." E.g., keeping
track of ranges of instruments, who reads which clef, numbering pages,
keeping count of the beats in each measure, even working toward the proper
harmony and counterpoint is often a heady process. During the heyday
of the WildMan gatherings of the early '90's it was often said that the
longest foot-and-a-half on a man's body is the distance from his head
to his heart. Much (if not all) of the greatest music travels that
foot-and-a-half many times. (Apologies for the gender bias--this also
pertains to music by women.)
