John Dalmas writes [in part] re Oskar Nedbal:
>In 1930 Vaclav Talich was chief conductor of the Czech Philharmonic, and
>had held that post from 1919, remaining until 1941. Nedbal was director of
>the orchestra earlier, from 1896-1906, when it was known as the Bohemian
>Philharmonic. According to my handy desk reference, Nedbal was conductor
>of the Vienna Volksoper at the time of his death. Another list member may
>have more details.
Nedbal was also the original violist of the Bohemian Quartet. He also
left that position in 1906, in a manner which occasioned a certain amount
of turmoil. According to the notes by Tully Potter in a Biddulph CD
collection [LAB 091/92]: "....just as they were due to tour England in
1906, Nedbal ran off to Egypt with [first violinist Karel] Hoffmann's wife.
The couple were happy together, but Nedbal's career in Bohemia was
virtually ended."
