My thanks to Bob and others for giving me an opportunity to put in a good
word (again!) for Kancheli's "Liturgy" for viola and orchestra, "Mourned by
the Wind". There are several recordings around, including one re-written
for cello, but my favourite remains Kim Kaskashian on ECM, which also has
Schnittke's viola concerto.
I like a lot of Kancheli, I find things to enjoy in almost all of
his output, and I've been haunted by "Wind" for 5 or 6 years now. I
wouldn't put it anywhere near the top of a list of "great 20th century
masterpieces", but I'm pretty sure I'd want it with me on that desert
island . . .
