Here's some new releases that a few list members might be interested in:
An ECM release of two piano music by Reger, Mozart, and Busoni. Artists
are Peter Serkin and Andras Schiff. Busoni and Schiff does sound odd.
Another 2-cd set of Mozart Piano Concertos on ECM played by Jarrett. I
was quite taken with the previous set.
Another volume on EMI of Beethoven piano sonatas played by Kovacevich
who's one of the best. But, piano sound has been a problem in previous
volumes.
Vasks string quartets played by the Miami String Quartet on Conifer.
Weren't we told that Conifer was closing shop a few months ago? If I
can't get the stright scoop on this board, where can I get it?
Cerha string quartets on CPO performed by the Arditti Quartet. This is
the pick of the month.
Alfred Hill symphonies 5 & 10 on Marco Polo.
This time, as an added bonus, I'll mention some releases that should have
a "deadly virus" label on them:
There are 15 new cds out in the Rilling Bach series on Hanssler. Does
Rilling own Hanssler? That would explain how he could get a large Bach
project with a record company.
"True Romantic" starring Byron Janis on EMI. Janis get us charged up
on Chopin and then really lets the ooze fly on Liszt. If you need a
sugar fix, this is your disc. If you need a shovel, I've got 2 extra.
Highlights from Der Rosenkavalier on the Chandos Opera in English series.
I haven't personally bought into this series, because my English isn't
too good.
It's all in fun. I woke up feeling like a "smart ass" and the feeling
hasn't yet dissipated. I don't really have anything against Rilling (just
Rilling/Bach), Janis is one great pianist, and English is a fine language.
Since word definitions have been a problem lately, I'll define smart ass
up-front: a combustible mixture of negativism, humor, and low-level
scarcasm.
