I would call Tureck's Goldberg a lot of things - but never scholarly
nor neutral. I think Tureck gives a devotional performance, each note
carefully - sometimes, perhaps, too carefully - weighed and judged. It
is sheer emotion. When I first heard it, however, I too was rather taken
aback with the approach chosen; on repeated hearings, that approach makes
eminent sense. And even though it is on the piano, the performance still
reaches, IMHO, the very heart of this work. It would not be the version
I would choose if I had to have only one or two performances - but I
certainly return to it more frequently than I initially thought I would.
And this fact alone - that it remains fascinating even after repeated
playings - shows that there is more - much more - than a scholarly and
neutral reading.
