Yes, the question of borrowed material is always intriguing, as it can be
used skilfully (the Brahms "Hadyn" variations come to mind) or badly (viz.
almost anything stolen by Andrew Lloyd Webber).  I'm currently copying out
a good score for a symphonic movment that I based on a Chinese tune called
"Yang Kwan"--it's always interesting to work with what you did 20 years
ago.
