What about Tippett's Blue Guitar. Especially the counterpoint in the
first movement. Or Carter's Changes.
I wouldn't necessarily agree that the difficult pieces are the best.
Something like the 5 Villa Lobos preludes are beautiful and affective
without too great a technical demand.
